Technical setup information

Information listed below will help you determine if you have the correct technical setup for studying online. If you are unsure or require technical assistance with any of these points, please contact your support consultant.

  1. Headphones and Microphone

    It's important that you have access to headphones and a microphone in order to take part in synchronous learning sessions (interactive online classes involving your peers and your tutor), to watch videos and listen to podcasts. We recommend a headset that includes a microphone. This technology is available to purchase in computer stores and online.

  2. Personal Computer

    We recommend a personal computer for your online studies. If you are planning on using a public computer, be aware that you may encounter problems gaining permission to download some of the essential programs and plug-ins.

  3. Operating System

    The minimum operating systems for your computer that will allow you to participate fully in online study are:

    • Windows XP or later (e.g. Windows 8)
    • Mac OS 10.6 or higher (e.g. Mac OS 10.8)

  4. Submitting assignments to Turnitin

    The Turnitin system supports the following browsers:

    • Firefox
    • Chrome
    • Safari

    Please do not use Internet Explorer when accessing Turnitin.

  5. Internet Connection

    To get the most out of your online studies, a broadband, DSL, cable modem or other reliable internet connection is essential.

  6. Student Email

    By now you will have activated your student email. That’s important because all email contact from the University of Melbourne will be via your student account.

    To access your student email account, please log in to the student portal and click the email icon. For additional information on student email account, refer to the University student email section on the ask.unimelb website.

  7. LMS Compatibility

    The following browsers work best with the LMS:

    • Chrome 37
    • Firefox 32
    • Internet Explorer 9,10 and 11
    • Safari 6, 7 and 8

  8. Bookmark or Favourites

    There are several websites that you’ll be visiting frequently. We recommend bookmarking them or marking them with the 'favourites' feature in your browser.

  9. Printing LMS pages

    You may want to print your learning materials, readings list, discussions or other useful information in your LMS.

  10. Virus Protection

    We recommend virus protection software to ensure your computer is not vulnerable to viruses or spyware.

    If you don’t already have anti-virus software on your computer, make sure that you download and install one from the many options available in the market that will protect your system against damage and data loss.

  11. Javascript

    Javascript is essential to accessing many aspects of your online learning materials.

    You will need to enable Javascript in your browser in order to view videos as well as take part in your synchronous learning sessions.

  12. Adobe Reader Browser Plug-in

    Please ensure you download and install Adobe Reader on your computer.

    Adobe Reader includes a plug-in that helps display PDF files in web browsers. If you have trouble viewing your PDF files, the Adobe help file - configure browser to use the Adobe PDF plug-in can guide you in resolving the issue.
